Quote of the Day

What marketing genius puttering around for new flavors decided that the lack of a cocoa-flavored carbonated beverage was a sign of thinking-inside-the-box blindness instead of one of the unwritten rules of decent civilizations?

Quote of the Day

It’s April twenty-first
and everybody knows
today is Earth Day
Merry Christmas
Happy Birthday
to whoever’s being born.
— Dramarama, “What Are We Doing Here?”

Beauty for the day

Work safe? Spring is here, the weekend looms, and if you prefer your goddesses clothed, go elsewhere.

No, I am not your little babushka!

Not quite sure how I ended up with this result, but…

Your Inner European is Russian!

Mysterious and exotic.
You’ve got a great balance of danger and allure.

Who’s Your Inner European?

Had you asked, I might have gone with German, French, or Italian. Russian, though? I don’t know about that.

A monument to stupditiditidity

Well, the WitNit tagged me for a meme he created, confessing your stupidest moment to the world.
The catalogue is both broad and deep, but I’m presuming that he means my adult self, which robs me of the chance to relate how I discovered, at two years old, what a hot stove feels like.
And, since it [...]

Quote of the day

Every night I take a ride
with little ol’ Lucy Brown.
We went to all the honkytonks
and we really got around.
She’s five foot two with eyes of blue
and pretty as a queen.
I didn’t know pop was a city cop
and she was just fifteen!
Good morning, Judge!
Why do you look so mean, sir?
And Mister Judge,
what can the charges be?

Beauty for the day

Work safe? Er, can I get back to you on that?
UPDATE: Still checking…

Training Wheels and Fiascoes

I’m still finding my bearings on Mandrakelinux (which is now, apparently, Mandriva, to dodge a ludicrous lawsuit from Hearst Publications). I’d dearly love to find a not-quite-idiot’s guide to the theory behind Linux, especially its file system, because some parts make sense, and some parts are seriously weirding me out. (For example, how [...]

Quote of the day

Bad faith isn’t the only problem to watch for. Bad ideas are what kill you.
— Frank Warner, 18 April 2005

Beauty for the day

Work safe? Yeah, but it’s a bikini full of trouble.

You know, Lois, there’s—there’s something I’ve got to tell you.

It’s that you can see what Clark Kent looks like in Bryan Singer’s upcoming Superman Returns, and the news is spectacular. There’s a shot of Lois Lane, too.

Quote of the day

If education provides anything, it should be an ability to think — that is, to weigh one idea against an opposing idea, and to use evidence and logic to try to determine what is true and what is false. That is precisely what our schools and colleges are failing to teach today.
— Thomas Sowell

Beauty for the day

Work safe? Well, kinda, but…

Fine listenin’

Is there a better album from the 1990s than Cowboy Junkies’ black eyed man?
I’ve owned it since ‘92 or ‘93, never been without it, never had a year where I didn’t have at least a week when it was in heavy rotation in my listening list, and it never, ever gets old. Probably the [...]

A reason to love Linux

I turned on my computer around 7 a.m. yesterday.
Turned it off just after midnight.
Rebooted it exactly zero times in that period, and had no slowdowns, something unheard of in WinXP. (I did log out and back in to activate some installed software, but only because I wanted to, not because I was forced to.)
Awwww, [...]
