Posting has been lax lately because I had an incredibly lousy weekend last week, and I try not to allow my bad mood to affect my postings.

(This lousy weekend, though not so bad as the one in June, had the distinction of being someone's specific responsibility, though perhaps not intent, rather than happenstance.)

I have, since Sunday, been a particular grouch. There have been some better moments this week, however.

One was meeting Will Duquette, who was in town for a programmers' conference. He's said a few nice things about meeting me, but I deny it all. Except for the part about my being a cheap gunsel with gaudy patter. That's mostly true.

The great thing about meeting him was that, though we're very very different, we've got similar personalities, and ended up commiserating about introverted types of things.

Also, his kids are adorably cute (and no, he showed me no pictures, I'm just going off behavior).

And, if I played my cards right, he had no idea I had a lousy weekend until just now.

Another nice thing was Pirates of the Caribbean, which as I noted, was quite entertaining.

Still another nice thing was an unexpectedly supportive acquaintance. I really, really appreciate it. I'm always surprised at which people decide I'm a decent person.

Last night I up and went to do something spontaneous, going to bug a friend who works at a downtown restaurant. I've been promising to do so for months, and she'd complained that I never do so. I even stepped into AfterWords to pick up a book to read during the times she wasn't on break. (Dead Man's Walk by Larry McMurtry, because I loved the miniseries of Lonesome Dove, which Walk is a prequel to. Just a few pages in, its quite decent.)

Wouldn't you know it, she was let go early, and I missed her by an hour.

Oh well, at least I got a book out of the deal.

Today I picked up remaindered editions of Selected Lives of Plutarch, which I've never read, and a reprint of the first edition of Fowler's Dictionary of Modern Usage, which I have used as a reference for years. I didn't mean to go buy books, but since I was impelled to buy, I at least got ones that were good for me.

My flatmate seems to have disappeared. I don't talk to him much, we're just sharing an apartment for two months. But he's not been around for nearly three days. It wouldn't be a big deal to me, except his computer and the cable modem are also gone. Nothing else, just my internet connection at home. Blarg.

Of course, if Monday rolls around and he's still not in evidence, I'm going to get worried about him, too, and try to track him down. Right now, he's probably just having a party-hearty weekend.

Okay, tomorrow I'm catching up on this week's email. Tonight, I've a date with Lara Croft Tomb Raider. This one just can't be as bad as the first.

Can it?
