Migrating to a World Without Windows

Nice packages

Package Management explained.
Ubuntu and its derivatives uses APT for their manager, and I always use the command line apt-get to update. It’s very slick and painless.

Elbow room

I got my RAM upgrade yesterday, so now my ancient beast of a laptop is not running on 160 MB of RAM (Xubuntu claimed it had 154 MB), it now has the maximum it can handle, 288 MB (Xubuntu claims 281).
The bad news is that it’s not as huge a help as I had hoped. [...]

Of course. That’s why they never malfunction.

On Huaihai Road downtown there are large video displays so that the Public won’t need to be apart from TV commercials for too long. I got to see one of them start up for the day a while ago.
It runs on Linux.
I’m tempted to say that it’s Damn Small Linux, but too much info [...]

Distros I use

I’ve been drifting among OSes lately, since I can’t get one to hunker down and do everything I need just yet (still experimenting).
What I use, and why:

Damn Small Linux. Day-Yumn! It’s under 50 megabytes, and it works. Load it into RAM on startup, and there’s nothing faster. Just about [...]

It really shouldn’t be that hard

The guy who named the blogosphere had a few… issues… installing Linux, specifically Xandros OS (which I’ve never used):
About fifteen minutes ago, after almost two and a half days of the kind that geeks will be familiar with - when you live on various flavors of caffeine, chips and popcorn, and a sandwich whenever you [...]

Hikarunix, first impression

In a sense, it’s futile to review Hikarunix as a Linux distribution, because it’s already one of my favorites.
I didn’t realize until booting into it today that it’s built on top of Damn Small Linux, which I think is just the cat’s meow. It’s one of my two or three favorite distros, [...]

Just when you thought there was a LiveCD for everything possible

Think we can entrap entice Pejman into Linux geekdom by letting him know about Hikarunix?
… the only operating system dedicated to Go. This CD was designed especially for Go players of all levels. Whether you’ve been playing for decades or have never heard of the game until now, this CD is for you.
Consider the gauntlet [...]

Bad Idea Jeans

Okay, it’s medium-geeky and technical, but nevertheless a good read: The Six Dumbest Ideas in Computer Security. Here’s the dessert, a few of the Minor Dumbs:

“We’re Not a Target” - yes, you are. Worms aren’t smart enough to realize that your web site/home network isn’t interesting.
“Everyone would be secure if they all just [...]

Unclear on the concept

Microsoft made a job offer recently, one that, from just about any angle, made no sense whatsoever.
They made it to Eric S. Raymond, a well-known proponent of Open Source Software and opponent of Microsoft and its business practices. Mr. Raymond’s measured response:
I’d thank you for your offer of employment at Microsoft, except that it [...]

Another Microsoft security flaw

In both Internet Exploder and Outtaluck:
Vulnerability could allow an attacker to take remote control of a user’s system, security specialist says.
Honestly, doesn’t this summary apply to all MS security flaws?

Dept. of Redundancy Dept.

We are shocked — shocked! — to hear of a major security flaw in MS Internet Exploder!

Big Changes Are A-Comin’

Linux news site Mad Penguin has a very interesting interview with MEPIS founder Warren Woodford. He strikes me as unusually canny:
MP: How are you going to avoid being crushed by the bigger companies like Red Hat, Novell, and Microsoft?
WW: The only way that Microsoft could crush us is by spreading FUD such as a [...]

Wishful Thinking, defined

Bill, Bill, Bill, Bill, Bill, you really just don’t have a clue, do you?
“How to Remove Linux and Install Windows XP”
What have you been putting in your pipe, to give you such dreams?
(UPDATE: Could it be in response to this, mayhap?)

Dude!

You know you’re a dork when this simple statement gets your juices going:
… I get great excitement from exploring the art of Linux distributions, and with Scientific Linux, that excitement is amplified by knowing I’m using the same operating system that is being used by many of the world’s leading scientists.
Practically guaranteed security and stability, [...]
